Moods of Denny Island

Denny Island, one minute shining like a beacon in the sunlight then the next dark and brooding.

Denny – one island but so many looks. The atmosphere changes with light, tide and viewpoint.

A half acre of scrubland in the middle of the Severn Estuary, Denny Island often appears as a distant focal point in my work –  the artistic full stop.

The sand banks known as the Welsh Grounds surround the island. They glisten when exposed at low water. The southern most shore marks the boundary between England and Wales.

The moods created by the changing light, tides and perspective fascinate me. So this series of rough sketches show the endless variations of Denny Island.

On a grey winter’s day Denny takes on a beautiful, muted simplicity. No detail just a simple shape and cool colour.

An unusually dramatic and fast moving cloud of snow engulfed Denny as it swept down the channel on storm force winds – an amazing sight!

Denny sparkled jewel like against the green-blue of the Welsh hills.

While the sun highlighted the vertical rocks of Denny it covered the the Welsh hills in a haze. The reflection from the sky made the usually brown water of the channel appear remarkably blue.

A pot of gold on Denny Island? The rainbow drenched the island in an unusual light.

Beautiful autumnal colours led the eye across the marsh towards the bold outline of Denny and the cool distant hills.

Shafts of sunlight on the Welsh hills but brooding Denny remained under a dark cloud. Hard to tell where the mudflats stopped and the famously brown water of the Severn Estuary started except where the wonderfully translucent blue of the sky reflected on the mud flats.

A clear day and both Denny and the hills beyond stood out well. Viewed from a point midway between the two salt marshes.
